KLIPSPRINGER

E xternally similar to the Steenbok, only with larger proportions and yellowish brown coloring. The hair is long and brittle, the hooves are placed vertically on the tip. Klipspringer only occur in rocky, mountainous areas. They are excellent climbers and very active even on the steepest rock walls. They live mostly in small family groups of two to five animals. They are matched in color to the granite rock environment. They stand on rocky blocks for long periods of time, secure in their confusing surroundings, which offer good cover. In case of danger, they flee only a short distance, and they generally go for an elevated point of view, usually a boulder. The old males sometimes have horn bases that clearly show pronounced rings. Areas with good promise: Erongo Mountains, Naukluft, rocky areas along the Namib River.
